People with disabilities are invisible – Open letter to EL.STATWith an open letter, ESAmeA (Greek National Confederation of Disabled People) denounces the lack of data and statistical information related to disability and the impact this has in the design of public policies. Moreover, ESAmeA submits its proposals for compliance with the requirements of both modern national and European legislation. The Confederation had concrete proposals on the need to develop specific indicators and surveys focused on disability since the consultation of the draft recommendations of the Greek Statistical Authority (EL.STAT.). Unfortunately, these proposals were not heeded, and the tragic results are apparent now, especially as Europe establishes a disability status as a special advance condition for signing the partnership agreement. It seems Greece may not be able to develop any credible policy for 18% of its people because of the lack of relevant data! And this is responsibility of EL.STAT!
People with disabilities or people with chronic illness, and their families, are now the “invisible” citizens who are not represented in the policies and plans of all ministries and regions.
