Who keeps us in cages?
European day of protest for equal rights for disabled people in Sofia, BulgariaSeveral dozen people participated in a protest organized by CIL Sofia in front of the Bulgarian National Assembly inSofia. At the event there were 4 cages – one big enough to fit 5 or 6 people and 3 smaller cages for one or two persons. The message that we were trying to deliver to the politicians through this action was that their national disability policies are terrible, focused as they are on the medical model that keeps us imprisoned – either in our own homes (smaller cages) or in a bigger institutions (the bigger cage), but with the same result – that disabled people in Bulgaria are not living according to the Independent Living philosophy and we are not empowered to have control over our own lives, leaving us totally dependent on awful public policy.
