In his last years, increasingly frail though he was, Nelson Mandela became one of the world's most important and effective campaigners against HIV/Aids. It was a difficult issue to take on because it pitched him into opposition with his own government. Believing that public confrontation would be unhelpful, he chose his words carefully; they were no less powerful for that.

In August I met Lynne Featherstone and she told me about the work DFID is doing to raise the profile of disability rights in international development.
Back in 2000 the UN’s Millennium Development Goals set out how they were going to change the world to meet the needs of the poorest over the next 15 years. Surprisingly, the goals didn’t include anything on disability despite poverty being disproportionately high amongst disabled people.

The first issue of the African Disability Rights Yearbook (AYDR) was launched at the Centre for Human Rights (CHR), Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, on 5 November 2013. The Yearbook is edited by Prof Charles Ngwena, who served as convening editor (at CHR), with Dr Ilze Grobbelaar-Du Plessis (Department of Public Law, University of Pretoria), Prof Helene Combrinck (University of the Western Cape) and Dr Serges Kamga (UNISA) as co-editors. Although the Yearbook was initiated by the CHR, the realization of the first issue was only possible through the collaboration between the individuals and institutions mentioned. The 2013 Yearbook (covering the situation as at 31 December 2012) was launched as part of an Academic Conference on Disability Rights in Africa,  held at the Centre on 5 and 6 November. The Yearbook will be published annually. Its publication has been made possible through financial support by the Open Society Initiative for Southern African (OSISA). The Director of the Centre, Prof Frans Viljoen, expressed gratitude to the authors and co-editors who contributed to this milestone.  He noted in particular the role of Prof Charles Ngwena who as convening editor, was the driving force behind the publication of the 2013 Yearbook. It is published by the Pretoria University Law Press (PULP), located at the Centre for Human Rights. It appears in hard copy and is available as a free downloadable document on http://www.pulp.up.ac.za/.

Centre for Human Rights launches African Disability Rights Yearbook (AYDR)

The African Disability Rights Yearbook breaks new ground in disability scholarship. Coming in the wake of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, it is the first peer-reviewed journal to focus exclusively on disability as human rights on the African continent. It provides an annual forum for scholarly analysis on issues pertaining to the human rights of persons with disabilities. It is also a source for country-based reports as well as commentaries on recent developments in the field of disability rights in the African region.
